iOS Removal Prevention Setup Guide for Mac

To set up Removal Prevention on iOS using a Mac, please follow these steps:

If the protected device has Stolen Device protection turned on, it is recommended to install Removal Prevention in a trusted place (home, work, etc.), otherwise you will need to wait until the one hour Security Delay ends. Click here for details

Step 1 – Download and run the Removal Prevention setup file

  1. Download the Removal Prevention setup file from this link. The file named Canopy_Removal_Prevention.dmg with the Canopy icon will appear in your computer’s Downloads folder.
  2. Click the Show Downloads button near the top-right corner of the Safari window, then double-click on the Removal Prevention installation file.
  3. A dialog box will appear with the Canopy icon . Double click the icon.
  4. When prompted, click Open.

Step 2 – Connect your iOS device to your Mac

  1. Connect the iOS device you would like to protect to your Mac with a USB cable.
  2. Press Trust when the notification appears. If the Trust notification does not appear, you may have already trusted this Mac in the past.
  3. Click the Start button on the installation setup screen on your Mac.

Step 3 – Backup using Finder (if you regularly back up your protected device skip to step 4)

  1. Open Finder on your Mac.
  2. Select the device you would like to protect from the Finder sidebar.
  3. Select General in the button bar.
  4. Click Back Up Now (below Backups)
  5. Click the Next button on the installation setup screen on your Mac.

Step 4 – Disable Passcode

  1. Open Settings on the iOS device you would like to protect.
  2. Tap Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode
  3. Enter your existing Passcode.
  4. Turn Passcode Off. You’ll be able to reactivate the passcode when Removal Prevention setup is complete.
  5. Click the Next button on the installation setup screen on your Mac.

Step 5 – Disable “Find My iPhone”

  1. Go back to Settings the iOS device.
  2. Tap your Apple ID name.
  3. Tap Find My
  4. Tap Find my iPhone, then tap again to turn it off.
  5. Enter your Apple ID password, then tap Turn Off. You’ll be able to reactivate the passcode when Removal Prevention setup is complete.
  6. Click the Next button on the installation setup screen on your Mac.
Step 6 – Grant Full Disk Access
 
  1. Click the Next button on the installation setup screen on your Mac.
  2. When prompted to the Security & Privacy window,
  3. Check the box next to Canopy_Removal_Prevention.
    Please note: On some macOS releases, click the small lock icon in the bottom right corner to edit permissions. Enter your Mac administrator password, then click Unlock.
  4. When prompted, click Later then close the Security & Privacy window.
  5. Click the Next button on the installation setup screen on your Mac.
  6. Your device will now automatically restart and Canopy will begin automatically setting up Removal Prevention. Important! Do not disconnect the device from the computer until the setup completes.

Step 7 – Enable Remote Management

  1. When the device you would like to protect has finished restarting, swipe up the welcome screen.
  2. Tap Next. (On some models tap Enroll this iPhone)
  3. Wait until the iPhone or iPad switches to the home screen, and then click the Finish button on your Mac. Important! Do not click Finish until this has happened.
Step 8 – Complete the installation
 
  1. Click the OK button on the installation setup screen on your Mac.
  2. Congratulations! Removal Prevention is now enabled.

        You may now disconnect the protected device and continue enjoying the internet without any worries

If you wish, you can now re-enable Passcode and Find My iPhone on the protected device
